Mustang Grape – Peanut Butter’s BFF

This is my bestselling jelly flavor!  It is also the main inspiration behind starting to sell jams and jellies at Farmers’ Markets.  I harvest the grapes from my farm and neighboring ranches in Lee County.  Now, Mustang Grape is a go to comfort food!  I love to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (peanut butter must be crunchy, of course!). And, on a good day, with a tall glass of chocolate milk!

Growing up, my mother would pay me a quarter a gallon to go pick grapes on the ranches behind our house in San Marcos.  Once I picked the grapes, she would make the Mustang Grape jelly – then she rationed it!  I never got to eat as much as I wanted.  I Probably ate two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches a day with chocolate milk for my lunch for at least 12 years through school and later at university.  I recon, I must have had at least 10,000 PBJ’s growing up, with most of them made with Mustang Grape Jelly.  Now, I can eat as much as I want and as often as I want, but my dad-body does not allow it.

The mustang grape is an indigenous wild grape that grows from the coastal areas around Corpus Christi up through Central Texas into Oklahoma.  It is one of a least 100 varieties of wild grapes in North America.  Many people confuse the Mustang grape with the Muscadine grape which grows across the Southern states and can also be found in the Houston area.

An interesting fact about this grape…it actually saved the French wine industry back in the 1880’s.  French grape vines were plagued by a disease killing them. Vintners used the Mustang grapes to graft transplanted French grapes to save them.
